The Art and Science of Clouds

Driving home from a bike ride this weekend, the sky was a perfect contrast of dark clouds higher in the atmosphere, lighter clouds closer to the ground and white fluffy clouds in front of the two of them. It looked just like a painting. I was also kicking myself for not knowing the actual names of all of the clouds, so I quickly pulled up a guide. I also learn best by drawing or creating something, especially to incorporate new scientific information, so I immediately knew this would be a fun activity to recreate for my students at Kalexedy Learning Center.

After pulling together resources from NASA and NOAA and Wikimedia Commons, I was able to develop an enrichment lesson that had us all learning more about clouds, they’re portrayal in art and how to paint them ourselves. A beautiful painting for me can be ruined with cartoon clouds in the background, so why not try making more accurate versions on our own?

If you’d like to try this activity with your students, I highly recommend it! It was an hour-long enrichment and I shared my slides as well.
